Faire recap

So I promised a recap of this past Fall Escondido Faire, and here it is.
So how was it? In a word, interesting. It seems the past couple Fall Faires have had something wonky happen with them. Last Fall, Patty (Queen Elizabeth) was sick the second weekend, so we had no Queen that weekend. What happened this Faire? Well, keep reading...
First Weekend:
Friday was setup day at the site, which went much as it always does. I was there helping where I could, and we got done in a reasonable amount of time. After that, everyone dispersed to do their own thing. Since I was waiting for Justin -who was carpooling with Cutty down from L.A. after work- I meandered about the site to visit folks in other groups whom I knew.
In the process of doing so, I met new people. See, I was walking along toward the area where the Gypsy group camps. The ground was a bit soft, and I stumbled at one point. When I did, my ring (which is already a teeny bit loose) slid off my right ring finger and fell in the grass. Remember that a) it's dark, and b) stupid me had no flashlight. So I saw this small group sitting at their camp, and called out, asking if they had a light. One of their members came over with his flashlight and I was able to find my ring again pretty quickly. I got to talking with them, and learned they were a new medical group whose members had left an old group a while ago. I vaguely recognized several of them from the prior group, but had never had the chance to properly meet them. We talked for a time, and I mentioned Justin was the Assistant Director for Guild Visitations. They happily agreed to pass word along to their leader (who was wandering elsewhere) that I'd bring him by to meet them when I could, we parted ways, and I meandered over to the Gypsy camp to visit my friends there.
Once I was finished visiting, I headed back to Glade, where I visited with the few Guildmates of mine who were still there. My phone rang at about 9:40PM; seeing it was Justin, I picked up, expecting to hear that they were almost to the site. Instead, I heard they had gotten a late start and were just leaving L.A. (Keep in mind it's easily a 2-2.5 hour drive from their part of L.A. to San Diego, plus we were planning to stay at my sister's for at least that weekend.) He told me to just unload his stuff and head on my own to my sister's while he stayed the night on-site. In response, I told him that I would check in with my sister, let her know what was going on, and that I would stay the night on-site with him and the others who were there. My sis wasn't thrilled about it (nor was Mom when I told her what I was doing), but I'd made my mind up. I sat in Glade for a bit longer to visit with folks before I decided to head down to my car and get our things to bring back up to the site in preparation for the night. They finally got to the site at about 11:40, and the two of us settled in for the night at around midnight. Sleep was interesting, due to the fact he brought his smaller (read: one-person) air mattress. The logistics were hell, and at one point I let him have the mattress while I took a couple blankets and slept on the ground, but we eventually figured things out.
Saturday was raining. At least, it was in the morning, and not enough to close the Faire for that day. However, it rained enough that Patty and Bill decided that they wouldn't be dressing out, and that dressing out was optional for the rest of us. Still, a few folks did. I took the time to introduce Justin to the medical group from the previous night, we had a bit to eat while listening to some of the entertainment, I walked around quite a bit on my own while he did his own thing (and eventually took a long nap), and I came back to find that he was sick. How? Damned if either of us know, we just know he was pretty sick. Luckily, we were staying at my sister's, so once we were turned loose from Faire, we made a supply run (food, cold meds, tissues), then headed there to eat, shower (for me), and sleep. While I was glad we were allowed to stay there, my sis did get a bit annoying with her prodding me about various things. (Plus, being woken up at 3AM with a splitting headache isn't fun.)
Sunday we got our things together and headed back to the site. I made sure we each had breakfast, and we got ready for the day. Nothing out of the ordinary happened Sunday, it was a pretty ordinary Faire day. In terms of Justin and I, our respective duties in the Guild keep us from spending a lot of time together, but I still made sure to take care of him where I could. I have a small plate that I let him use during Glade Stop for food, and I bought a little package of fudge (no nuts!) for him to take home with him that evening.
During the interim time between weekends, my own health wavered. I'm not sure where the bug came from -whether Justin or another source- but it was apparently my turn to get sick. With Justin not coming until early Saturday morning (and thankfully bringing his larger air mattress this time!), I went home after lite Setup Friday night, took a shower, medicated myself, and went to sleep.
I woke up super early Saturday morning, got myself ready, and got to the Faire site at around 7:15 or so. Justin arrived about 10 minutes later, I got food, and we started our day. We were down a couple people in Household (P was out all weekend with a bad back, and we lost a second person to heat exhaustion), but we were able to pull things off just fine. I hate that I missed Justin's posey during stage show, since I was assisting with preparing food for Glade Stop. But my story for the Queen was well-received (and a lot of fun!), and I was able to get a bit more chocolate to share with Justin.
What was the best part of that evening? Jeff (one of our Guildmates) was able to get Justin to wear a kilt. Jeff has a number of kilts, and he gave Justin one that he rarely wears anymore. It's a gorgeous Royal Stuart tartan that looked amazing on Justin when he had it on. He wore it that evening when we had dinner with the Guild, and I hope he has more reasons in the future to wear it. From there, we headed back to the site and spent time with people. Since I was sick, we wouldn't be allowed at my sister's -and I didn't want to go back home and see my folks again quite yet- so I stayed on-site Saturday night. It was a nice night sleeping together on that larger air mattress, even if it was a bit cold.
Sunday morning, I woke up with almost no voice. What a drag. But I still got up, got breakfast (along with some hot chocolate for Justin, since he'd been so sweet to me that Faire), and killed time until we needed to get ready for the day. Another typical Faire Sunday, ending with full tear-down. I did my best to help out, but the cold air and dust were not helping with my coughing fits, and I went home about 20 minutes or so after Justin left. Since then, I've been steadily getting better, with most of my voice back by today.
So they were fun weekends, all in all. The rain threw a bit of a wrench in the first weekend, and my being sick didn't help the second weekend, but I still had a great time. I can't wait to see folks at the next meeting, and I can't wait for the next Faire season to start. :)
